LOCKPORT, N.Y. — Lockport has a new leader. Effective Wednesday, Common Council President David Wohleben is now Mayor.

This comes as former Mayor Anne McCaffrey moves on to be president and CEO of Eastern Niagara Hospital.

Wohleben says taking over will give City Hall stability since he's already been around, making it a smooth transition.

Retired Wohleben says he's looking forward to this new role as it's something he's passionate about and it'll keep him busy. He's been getting the 411 to ensure he knows the ropes.

"The mayor has been great with me," said Wohleben. "She has kept me involved with everything regarding the city. From contract negotiations, any major infrastructure projects that we have, I am at department head meetings. So, she has kind of kept me by her side."

Wohleben isn't guaranteed a full term in office, however. He'll be on November's ballot and if he wins Wohleben will remain in office until 2019.

Wohleben says after that he will decide whether or not to run for a full four-year term.
