BUFFALO, N.Y. — 3D printable guns may sound like something from Star Trek, but federal leaders are sounding the alarm and state Senate candidate Shaqurah Zachery said she's taking notice.

"It's going to be a reality and it's alarming," she said. "It's absolutely alarming."

If the Trump administration goes through with a legal settlement, blueprints could be available for guns like AR-15s as soon as August 1. Those plans could then be manufactured by anybody with access to a 3D printer.

"They are hypothetically functional and they're also undetectable. So these are weapons that are plastic so they would not be detectable by our standard security systems, that would not go off on a metal detector," Zachery said.

She said she has multiple concerns, not the least of which is the potential access to lethal weapons for terrorists and children.

"This is a subversion of the New York State SAFE Act. We have legislation in place that requires registration of individuals that keeps track of who is allowed to possess weapons and there are certain individuals who are forbidden to possess those weapons. This would be an opportunity for people who we know aren't supposed to possess those weapons to access them," Zachery said.

She is calling on her primary opponent, Democratic state Senator Tim Kennedy, to support and advocate for federal efforts to block the blueprints. Kennedy said he's already reached out to U.S. Senator Chuck Schumer who is crafting a bill.

"We want to make sure that we mitigate this immediately. We have to make sure that people are following the law," he said.

But he said the issue is not as relevant in New York as it is in other parts of the country because of the state's strict gun laws. Kennedy pointed out there are no exemptions for the state ban on automatic weapons.

"This is not going to be legal in the state of New York due to the SAFE Act. Any firearm that is purchased or is in possession that is not registered is illegal," he said.

Kennedy recognized it could make it easier for people to break state law which is why he wants to make clear, if people possess illegal guns they will go to jail.
