New York State Police say a volunteer firefighter was rushed into surgery Monday evening after a crash in Orleans County.

This happened northwest of Holley shortly before 6 p.m. on Route 31 near Fancher Road.

Troopers say 27-year-old Jared Thompson's pickup truck was driving east with his blue volunteer fire department lights activated when he rear ended a grain hauler.

Once freed from the wreck, the volunteer firefighter from Albion was airlifted to a hospital for treatment of serious injuries. He remains in guarded condition.

State police at the scene say Thompson is a firefighter with the Fancher-Hulberton-Murray Fire Company.

Officers spent hours reconstructing the crash scene as part of their investigation.
