West Seneca resident Russell Devans was outside with his dogs putting up lawn furniture Saturday afternoon when he noticed something in the distance.

"The skies were as dark as night toward Cheektowaga and Buffalo. I saw thunder and lightning and thought, wow they're really getting hit bad", said Devans.

Within a matter of seconds things quickly changed.

"As I was putting the last of the furniture in the lawn shed it started hailing and I said, 'I better hurry up with this so I don't get wet.' And I was out there with our dogs and our dogs just froze and they started looking off down the street, and I said something's wrong here. So we just took off. We ran into the garage and got the garage doors shut,"said Devans.

It was a tornado.

"It only lasted a minute or less. Then we realized it skipped over our house, did a little damage to the house next door, then it went to the apartments and ripped the roof off," said Devans.

Sunday, you could see the aftermath. Tree limbs and roofing on the ground in front of the apartments and a debris field out back. The tornado also sent debris high into the trees.

According the National Weather Service the tornado was an EF0. Spectrum News meteorologist Brooke Zegarelli says that's the lowest intensity tornado.

"Winds approximately were 65 to 75 mph. So, damage is definitely going to be on the lighter side, but when you're talking an EF4 tornado winds would be between 166 and 200 mph and at that point you're talking widespread and devastating damage for those areas," said Zegarelli.

Crews are now assessing the damage.

"We're looking for water damage inside the apartment units, the ceilings, the walls. Water came through the light fixtures in some cases. We're very concerned about the insulation in the attic. There's probably six to 12 inches of insulation in that attic that's soaking wet, it should be removed," said Robert Orlowski, Servicemaster owner.

No one was injured when the tornado touched down. Residents will be allowed to remain in their condos while crews work on repairing the roof.
