The Buffalo City Mission has officially broke ground on a new $15 million community center.

The new facility will allow the mission to expand services.

It will include a medical clinic where health screenings and flu shots will be provided.

There will also be a recuperation wing where guests who have been discharged from the hospital can continue their recovery.

The center is double the size of the original and will allow the mission to serve twice the amount of people they do now.

The mission is focused on preventing homelessness, by providing resources like job training and mental health care.

"Homelessness is not decreasing, it is increasing year over year and that's why providing preventative services on the front end with this new community center is really going to help those that are struggling with poverty and stepping out into homelessness and those that are already homeless,” said Aubrey Calhoun, associate executive director of the City Mission. “We have wonderful services that can get them back on track."

The mission will stay open while construction is underway.

The new building is expected to be open in 2020.

The mission is still looking to raise an additional $4 million for the project.
