EAST AURORA, N.Y. — For nine years "The Vidler on the Roof" had the best view of East Aurora.

But earlier this summer, his vision was impaired when his glasses were stolen right off his face.

"They didn't fall off or blow off, we didn't find any evidence of that," said Vidler's owner, Don Vidler. "That time of year it was probably a senior prank, what we were guessing, they were never returned, we never found them, no ransom note, no idea where they were."

With no suspects and no leads, the Vidler family found a temporary fix with a pair of glasses made from light-up tubing.

"He looked very colorful, Elton John-ish, with those glasses," he said.

But it was only right that the statue was returned to his former glory. Tuesday replica glasses made from the same specs as the originals were afixed to his head.

And the Vidler on the Roof was made whole again.

"I hate to use the word 'iconic' but people know what the statue is," Vidler said. "Kids on school buses wave to Mr. Vidler on the roof and tourist and out-of-towners come and take pictures and it's just not the same without his glasses."

But the case of the missing glasses isn't shut just yet.

"Supposedly someone said they heard a rumor at the high shcool that they may show up in the near future, but that's all I've heard," he said.
