JAMESTOWN, N.Y. — From vaudeville and stand-up, to television and film, the National Comedy Center is set to open next week in Jamestown.

"It's a mix of old and new, and past and present. It's a beehive of activity here at the Comedy Center," said Journey Gunderson, National Comedy Center executive director.

Producers, designers and construction crews continued to put the finishing touches on the 37,000 square foot space Monday. The center comes complete with dozens of artifacts and 50 unique exhibits for visitors to personalize through a chip in their wristband.

"It's a lively dynamic interactive experience where if you are compelled by technology and interaction, there's something here for you," said Gunderson.

The opening coincides with the annual Lucille Ball Comedy Festival that features several performers, including Amy Schumer, Lily Tomlin and Dan Aykroyd. It's all part of America's favorite redhead's legacy and vision.

"To make Jamestown a destination for the celebration of all comedy. And elevate comedy as the art form that it is," said Gunderson.

"It's going to be huge. And the downtown area is just going to be on fire,” Lt. Gov. Kathy Hochul (D) said.

State leaders say much of the $50 million project was made possible through the Buffalo Billion that included renovating the city's historic train station. They added the center will boost the local economy, and serve as a regional destination for the millions who travel to Niagara Falls, Canalside Buffalo and wine country.

"It's a whole synergy that's being created to have more than just a day or two visit in Western New York. But it's also going to add a pizazz factor," said Hochul.

While the experience is expected to attract tens of thousands of visitors a year, leaders say the key to the center's success is to get people to come back through those turn-styles.

"We designed with repeat visitation in mind. For the skimmers, the swimmers and the divers. You could spend six or seven hours here or a whole weekend or have a great time in the hour and a half you have if you're on your way somewhere else."

Tickets are on sale as the grand opening runs August 1-5.
