OLEAN, N.Y. – A story time event including a drag show at Olean Public Library was met with outrage Wednesday. The event is called the "Drag Queen Kids Party" and it was well attended by parents and children alike.

As families entered the building they were met by both supporters and protesters. This was the first story time event hosted by a drag queen.

"It is a very clean show,” said Barry Benjamin. “I'm a professional who works with children. If your only context for drag queens is nightclubs, you might expect some adult things to be happening, but really I'm like a glamorous clown.”

Benjamin also known as "Flo Leeta" hosted the party and read selections from the library including "Jacob’s New Dress" and "Morris Micklewhite and the Tangerine Dress."

Following the book reading – Benjamin opened the floor for the children to ask whatever questions they wanted. The show closed with a performance of Disney’s Frozen theme song, "Let It Go." Benjamin says the show is meant to promote inclusion, diversity and anti-bullying.

Protesters outside the venue say they thought the event was anything but harmless.

"Someone mentioned that this person would be like a clown -- we both know what an old fashion clown is and it’s certainly a lot more innocent than this," said Esther Randall.

Despite the controversy and threats of violence via social media by a Neo-Nazis group – Michelle LaVoie, the Olean Public Library’s director says she stands by the decision to continue with the show.

"We represent all sections of the community,” said LaVoie.  “Public libraries have always [historically] served the marginalized. To allow a majority to silence a minority -- that is not what public libraries are about."
