NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. — The hashtag "#BoycottUSA” is a call for Canadians to boycott U.S. goods and trips to the states in response to President Trump’s tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum, and his personal attacks on Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

"Sounds like a small argument that's been blown way out of proportion and it's getting way out of hand," said Chris Murphy, Canadian shopper.

Murphy, a Toronto resident, brings his family to the Fashion Outlets of Niagara Falls several times a year. While he's not pleased with the tariffs, he feels the call for a boycott may be overreacting.

“It's too soon to really be doing something like that. I mean, if we really see some damage being done on our side and then, you know, maybe you take steps. But, right now I think it's too soon to be doing things like that," said Murphy.

Canadian Mike Cira supports the Trump tariffs because he thinks they will help level the playing field until a new NAFTA agreement is reached. However, he's not going to stop crossing the border to purchase U.S. products.

"Dairy products, buying it here saves me money. If they want to shop up there that's fine, I don't blame them. Buy Canadian if that's what you want to do. I look at my bankbook and my pocketbook, and that's the bottom dollar for me. So, I shop here for most of my things," said Cira.

If one really wants to know how important Canadians are to the regional economy, come to the Fashion Outlets of Niagara Falls. Most of the shoppers there are from Canada.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Canada is the most important market for U.S. goods, importing a total of $98.9 billion in goods in the first four months of 2018 alone.

In the meantime, Chris Murphy is just hoping the two countries can work out their differences before it's too late.

"We take all our vacations down here. We go to Myrtle Beach and Florida every year, we really enjoy it. I love the United States, but I love my country just a little bit more. And if it came down to it, I'm going to choose my country over the United States," said Murphy.
