BUFFALO, N.Y. — How do you get young cancer patients to talk about the hardest battle of their lives?

It's a question doctors at Roswell Park and Hospice Buffalo are conducting a joint study to answer.

According to officials there, more than 70,000 people between the ages of 15 and 39 are diagnosed each year, but many don't participate in traditional emotional therapy support.

Leaders are hoping a new app called "PixStori” will help fix this.

It's currently being developed at the University at Buffalo and has been used as part of the study.

The app allows users to upload pictures and then use audio or text to describe them.

Each week, doctors encourage patients to post to it using prompts or themes surrounding their diagnosis.

And so far, they say it is working.

"It's a way of creating a space for people to post their pictures to see other people's pictures and try to derive some meaning and also some support from each other,” said Dr. Megan Pailler, of Roswell Park’s Department of Psychosocial Oncology.

Roswell Park is wrapping up its second study group featuring the app and doctors there hope to one day see it take off nationwide.
