A Genesee County grand jury has cleared a Sheriff's Deputy of any wrongdoing in a fatal shooting of a man last month.

On the night of April 11th, Genesee County Sheriff's deputy Ryan Young shot and killed 61-year-old Keith Kent outside of a Pembroke bar and restaurant.

Young will not face any criminal charges after the Genesee County District Attorney's Office determined that the 6-year veteran was justified in the shooting of Kent outside of the Log Cabin Restaurant.

The DA’s office says the case is now closed and Deputy Young has returned to full service.

The state police investigation relied heavily on witness statements as body cameras did not clearly capture the shooting. Genesee County 1st Assistant District Attorney Melissa Cianfrini helped prepare the findings of the investigation for the grand jury trial. Cianfrini said that patrons were "afraid for their lives" on the night of the shooting.

"Patrons and employees at the restaurant went down into a basement and began to arm themselves with materials while hiding," said Cianfrini.

At some point, prosecutors say Kent re-entered the restaurant and made threats.

"Upon arriving at the scene, the Genesee County Sheriff's Deputies encountered Mr. Kent in the parking lot. Prior to encountering him they heard a shot being fired," said Cianfrini.

Authorities say that Kent began to approach deputies with his weapon raised.

"He was given multiple directives by Sheriff's Deputies to drop his weapon, he did not comply with those directives," said Cianfrini.

At that time Deputy Young discharged his service weapon approximately 15 times. No other officers fired. Kent was struck once in the neck with another bullet grazing his back.

"These witnesses told the New York State Police that they were in fear for their lives that night. One witness even credited the Genesee County Sheriff's Office with saving his life that night," said Cianfrini.
