WASHINGTON, D.C. — Several machinists from around the country stood alongside Congressional Democrats at the Capitol Wednesday criticizing the Republican tax cut plan.

President Trump signed the law late last year to create corporate tax cuts and spark investment, hiring and wage growth for the middle class. Democrats proposed a better deal to invest in manufacturing and create jobs for American workers.

James Lewis was one of those machinists. He has been employed at Dresser-Rand in Wellsville for thirty years, and is one of 250 local union machinists set to lose their job. Makers of commercial steam turbines and propulsion units for aircraft carriers, company owner Siemens announced in February it was transferring its commercial business to North Carolina, and selling off its government business.

"But the effects go far beyond us. 4,600 people in Wellsville. It's going to devastate. Because this is about $20 million, annual money that is not going to be circulated in this community anymore," said Lewis.

Layoffs at the plant begin in September.
