NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. — The number of volunteer firefighters across the state is shrinking, according to the Fireman’s Association of the State of New York.

In an effort to boost those numbers, they’re holding an event called Recruit New York.

On April 28 and 29, more than 300 departments across the state will open their doors to anyone who’s interested. And they’re looking to fill a variety of positions.

“There are also other needs for people, not just to go to fires, we need people for fundraising. Sure everyone pays a fire tax, but the fire company still needs to do fundraising because it doesn’t cover enough to buy the newest and latest and greatest equipment,” said Bruce Mack, Frontier volunteer firefighter.
