AMHERST, N.Y. — When you think of your typical middle school teacher, dance moves aren't usually the first thing that comes to mind, but the teachers at Casey Middle School in Amherst have been dancing for years.

"It was probably five years ago when we did our first talent show and just got on the stage and danced. From there we decided to make a video and it kind of spiraled from there," said reading teacher Alex Hopkins.

"Instead of us just having that in our school community, we wanted to reach past that and reach out to our local community and have people take action alongside us," said math teacher Casey Pulaski.

From there the website Teachers Beat Cancer was born, and along with it three music videos set to pop songs from artists like Bruno Mars starring the staff at Casey Middle.

"The kids come up to you and say ‘oh I love your video’ or ‘that was so cool,’ and you feel like you've connected with them in a way," said technology teacher Timothy Bender.

While the videos are eye-catching, it’s what’s underneath that the educators-turned-performers hope get your attention: links to organizations that contribute to cancer research where you can either donate your money or volunteer your time.

"I guess you kind of know that cancer is out there and everywhere, but when we started asking people what they thought would be a good cause, it seems like every other person has a story with cancer," said video editor and math teacher Hally O'Malley.

Launched last month, the videos have already generated more than 3,000 clicks for the cancer research websites, and are setting a good example for Casey Middle students in the process.

"What I want our students to see is that if there's something that they care about that there are ways they can go after that and pursue that and make a positive change in the community around them," said Casey Middle School Principal Pete Dobmeier.

Other schools have already reached out to be a part of Teachers Beat Cancer and organizers say they’re planning their next project, but weren’t at liberty to say what was on the playlist.
