After serving South Buffalo for more than 30 years, the Franciscan Center announced Tuesday it will be closing its doors.

“We have done wonderful work here for 38 years and, while the need is still present, our services are not being sought as in previous times,” said Father Joseph Bayne, the center’s executive director.

Thousands of young men have been helped by the center since it opened in the early 1980s.

“Some went on to do great things. Several have gone into the military, have gotten other jobs around the country and they do call us, they do visit us and that’s what it’s all about,” he said.

Decisions on the future of the center’s buildings will be made in the coming weeks.
