CHARLOTTE -- Dozens of immigrant advocates want Mecklenburg County Commissioners to pass a resolution against the 287(g) program which flags county jail inmates for deportation proceedings.

“We really need you, I’m begging you guys! Something needs to be done,” said Leisha Acosta, whose husband was recently deported after he was arrested and processed under 287(g).

Several people voiced their opposition for the program during the commissioners meeting.

But members of CharMeck Court Watch, who support the program, believe the recent discussion about 287(g) is one-sided.

“Lots of misinformation out there that these deputies goes into the community and drags these people in to be processed under 287(g), that couldn't be further from the truth,” said Marcus Philemon, CharMeck Court Watch.

Commissioners didn't take a vote for or against the program but they've asked the Sheriff for more information and data related to the program.
