The Niagara Falls Water Board approved about $2 million in special projects at a meeting Monday.

The board approved a nearly $470,000 contract to replace a section of water main piping that runs from Buffalo Ave and South 91st Street to 102nd street.

It was awarded Visone Construction from Depew, which is scheduled to repair and replace fire hydrants in addition to the water main installation.

The biggest award of the night went to Modern Disposal of Lewiston. The company received a three-year, $1.4 million dollar contract to haul and dispose of sludge from the water plant.

"When the product comes in from the city sewer system, it goes to the waste plant and through a process,” explained Daniel O’Callaghan, chair of the Niagara Falls Water Board. “The solids are removed from the water and it goes through the filters and thickeners and then there's belt presser that press the water out of the solids and then it goes into a hopper. And those solids are placed in a dumpster and hauled to a landfill."

It's scheduled to take 40 days to complete once the work begins on April 1st.

This comes months after a water main break caused decreased pressure for several days to Niagara Falls High School and the Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center for nearly a week.
