More than 2,000 gallons of jet fuel spilled near the Buffalo Niagara International Airport Friday after a tanker truck hit a fence.

The truck crashed near the intersection of Holtz Drive and Genesee Street just before 5:30 a.m. Emergency crews began working on the spill within a few minutes.

There were no delays reported at the airport, but Genesee Street was closed for a short period to facilitate the clean-up. Crews needed several hours to contain and clean the spill.

"The soil will be removed that was contaminated with the jet fuel,” said Bill Major, Buffalo Niagara International Airport’s fire chief. “The fuel itself that's in the sand will be brought back over will be cleaned, vacuumed up and cleaned over by our oil-water-separators here on property that we use for that as well. So it will be cleaned up, remediated, and then the contaminated sand will shipped off per the DEC regulations."

The cause of the crash is still under investigation.
