State Senator Chris Jacobs introduced new legislation that would require insurance companies to pay for fertility treatments for patients with cancer. He made the announcement from Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center Friday morning.

The legislation is designed to help those being treated for cancer focus on recovery instead of worrying about whether they’ll be able to have children. Chemotherapy and other forms of treatment often cause fertility problems later.

Jacobs said “everybody should have a right to” the scientific treatments that allow cancer patients to try to have children after getting a clean bill of health.

He is hoping to get the legislation passed by the end of the year.
