NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. — Students at Niagara Falls High School will join countless others across the country in walking out of their classes on Wednesday.

It’s a show of support for the 17 students killed at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Florida last month and will observe 17 minutes of silence, one for each victim.

Students must register in advance to participate and will receive two paper hearts: one that will serve as a hall pass; the other to describe how they'll work to make the world a better place.

Students helped develop this two-part concept and worked with the school to organize it, said Niagara Falls Superintendent Mark Laurie. In a further show of solidarity, students are encouraged to wear red and black, the colors of the school in Florida.

Other schools in the district will honor the moment of silence beginning at 10 a.m. Wednesday.

Across the region, schools are taking different approaches in recognition of the event.

Lancaster High School will read the names of the 17 victims during a moment of silence but students will not be allowed outside. Instead, they will be walking around inside the school for 17 minutes.

A spokesperson for the Buffalo Public School District said it will provide other educational opportunities for students starting at 10 a.m., including allowing them to join hands in the hallway or different activity.
