BUFFALO, N.Y. — New legislation sponsored by Sen. Chris Jacobs centers on the Department of Motor Vehicles and its sales of customer information.

According to Jacobs, the law requires that the DMV allows customers to opt out of those sales, but the option is not available on the forms.

Jacobs is proposing the forms be updated with a section to decline or accept information sales.

"I've heard time and time again that [customers] believe this information should be private," said Jacobs. "They believe that an individual should have the opportunity to keep their personal information private by choice and that's what the opt-out box will do."

Erie County Clerk Michael Kearns told Spectrum News he is aware of the sales and fully support the legislation to update the forms.
