BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Fruits, vegetables and herbs, and often in combination, are what old family flu and cold remedies are made of, as well as pre-mixed elixirs like You're Fired Cider made by Bootleg Bucha.

"They're making these concoctions that are out there that you can buy in a jar, you can take it by, you know, the teaspoon or tablespoon all throughout the season. You know, they're definitely those elixirs that might be reminiscent of something that grandma or great-grandma made, but they're made for you," said Jill Chiacchia, founder and director of the Be Healthy Institute in Hamburg.

Lucas said, "We have people who are already sick coming in looking for a bottle, we have people who are desperately trying to prevent getting sick for the season and then we have a lot of people who just pick it up all the time because again, they do that shot in the morning or before meals," said Heather Lucas, vice president of product development with Bootleg Bucha.

"The horseradish in there kind of can take away some of that sinus pressure. The apple cider vinegar, you would think it's kind of harsh on the throat but can actually be kind of soothing to do a shot once you're sick."
