ROCHESTER, N.Y. — There's a new look on a downtown building that has played a key role in Rochester's commercial history for more than a century.

“Rochester is at that cusp of a renaissance. Sibley Square just so happens to be at the epicenter of it,” said Sibley Asset Manager Ken Greene.

The Sibley building downtown is seeing some major renovations, however developers are making sure that the history of the building is reserved. So far an estimated $100,000 has been spent to preserve the building’s art deco style.

“All of the plaster castings from the early 1900s are still above the elevators showing scenes of Rochester and Upstate New York,” said Greene.

The new additions to Sibley’s include 176 luxury apartments with individual floor plans, thousands of square feet in office space, new opportunities for business growth and an entire community within one building. According to Greene, three charter schools have expressed interest in moving into the old Monroe Community College downtown campus.

“We’re delighted to give them something that they can’t get anywhere else,” said Greene.

Plans are also in the works to build a food court and bar on the first floor for the entire community to enjoy.
