BUFFALO, N.Y. — As the Buffalo Public Schools’ contract with the NFTA nears its 20th year, many parents and students are calling for changes to accessibility for students.

A public forum to discuss these concerns was held Thursday night at the Merriweather Library on Jefferson Avenue.

Members of the public were able to speak to representatives from the NFTA, with many raising concerns over bus times and routes for students as well as the treatment issued by NFTA Police.

The Buffalo Public School District pays $75 per month, which is equivalent to an adult pass, to provide each student with transportation to and from school.

Students need a special pass to receive transportation from an after-school activity or weekend programing, a process which parents say is confusing for children to navigate.

"We're not sure it's well disseminated to the community or to the parents of the students, so we want to make sure it's clear what those products are. And then to listen to everybody tonight and see what those needs are. At the end of the day, it's the Board of Education that's going to make the decision on what they want to provide or don't want to provide,” said Tom George, NFTA director of Public Transit.

Younger students requested the passes be extended to middle school students as well.
