BUFFALO, N.Y. — At 12:01 a.m. Monday, millions were busy welcoming in the new year. But for one Western New York family, they spent that time welcoming their new baby girl.

Baby Kaira Bargotya was the first 2018 baby born in the region. She was born at Millard Fillmore Suburban Hospital in Williamsville.

She’s the first baby for mom and dad. Both were overjoyed to meet their baby girl.

"She is special in many ways. She's the first one in 2018. I think everyone will remember that," said mother Bulbul Bargotya.

"I think it's always special when we bring babies into the world, but especially in the new year, it represents hope. And we're very excited that we had the first baby this year,” said Stacey Anderies, Kahlida labor and delivery interim nurse manager.

The first baby born at the new Oishei Children's Hospital this year came just a few hours later.

Neema Hussein was welcomed at 2:36 a.m.

Though she's the first for the year at Oishei, she’s the sixth for the Hussein family.

Both families received a care package from Fisher-Price/Mattel valued at over $500.
