BUFFALO, N.Y. — There are no clear answers about why Travis Green allegedly opened fire outside the Dollar General near Union Road in Cheektowaga Tuesday, but Fred Elamin says he's confident of one thing.

"He didn't go out, knowing him, with the intent, without a doubt, to hurt no one, to injure anyone—that wasn't his intent," Elamin said.

Elamin says he's known Green since he was 4 years old, in part through his Youth Community Relations Corporation, where he's director. According to him, Green is a good father and law-abiding citizen who took part in the corporation's employment programs.

He says the character of the person he knows doesn't sync up with this incident.

"Shock, total shock," said Elamin of learning that Green was the suspect in police custody. "That's why I'm here now, because it's not him."

When it comes to motive, Elamin says he does know Green was going through a tough time.

"He was under a lot of pressure, though. Some people can take pressure better than others. He maybe wasn't good at the time with losing his wife, losing a job," Elamin said.

And he notes there may be an explanation for part of the evidence recovered at the scene.

"When he had all these guns and he had the bullets, he was going to the gun range where he goes shooting. That was his intent when he left the house," Elamin said.

Questions remain for Elamin, just as they do for investigators. One thing he's grateful for: that no one was seriously injured.
