NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. -- The Niagara County SPCA will reopen Wednesday after five cats died of a rare viral infection.

SPCA officials say feline panleukopenia usually effects young unvaccinated kittens in the summer months.

This case is rare, since it is now late in the season and many of the animals did have prior vaccinations.

The cats with the outbreak are quarantined from other animals. The SPCA also cleaned and disinfected the affected areas.

"It has been contained to the back of our building," said Amy Lewis, Niagara SPCA executive director. "We do have a quarantine area that all kittens and cats go into before they go on the adoption floor. There have been no instances of the disease on our adoption floor, so it's not affecting those animals that are available to the public."

The shelter was closed Monday because of the outbreak and is normally closed on Tuesdays.

It will be open for regular business hours Wednesday.
