BUFFALO, N.Y. -- The scene is now safe after the Erie County Bomb Squad was called to Buffalo's West Side Monday morning.

Police received a report of a grenade in the 200 block of Baynes Street, between Lafayette and West Delavan Avenue.

The homeowner, Kathy Lorenzo, moved into the house last week and she was cleaning her garage when she discovered it.

Lorenzo says she picked it up and took a picture of it to show a friend, who then told her to call police.

The Erie County Bomb Squad, Buffalo police and fire responded to the scene.

They were eventually able to safely take the bomb away.

"I'm feeling overwhelmed by all of it, but I mean the response from the police department, the fire department, the bomb squad, I was really impressed, I was very, very impressed, but I feel OK now,” said Lorenzo.

A Buffalo fire official says he assumes the grenade is at least 40 years old, due to corrosion.

He adds that new homeowners should be vigilant about thoroughly sweeping any home.
