Two loose devices made to look like pipe bombs were left on the steps outside the South District Police station in Buffalo early Friday morning, Captain Jeff Rinaldo confirmed.

A member of the city's janitorial staff found the device and alerted police, Rinaldo said.

"This was an isolated incident," he said. "To date, we have not received any threats. I think, unfortunately with what we're seeing in the media regarding this going around the country, you do get the opportunistic copycat that they're gonna do this and they think it's funny."

Whether it's a functioning bomb or a toy, placing it with the intent of making people think it's a bomb means the suspect is "guilty of a D Felony," Rinaldo said. "We will treat this as seriously as if it were a pipe bomb."

If convicted, the person faces a sentence of one to 15 years in prison, depending on the suspect's criminal history, Rinaldo said.

All city facilities are now under 24-hour surveillance.

The two devices were later destroyed by the county bomb squad.

No one was hurt.

The scene on South Park Avenue was clear by mid-morning.
