BATAVIA, N.Y. -- Investigators with the Genesee County Sheriff’s Office say 58-year-old Sherri Butler was found dead inside the Sunset Motel on West Main Street Road just before noon Monday.

The Monroe County Medical Examiner’s office ruled the cause of death was a homicide after an autopsy Tuesday. They said Butler died from a puncture wound to the neck and had other superficial injuries.

Butler has been living in the Sunset Motel since at least 2014.

They say they do have a history of calls involving her but would not get into the nature of those encounters. Previously she lived in Rochester and the Rochester Police Department is helping in this investigation.

Butler was last seen late Friday or early Saturday morning but the hotel’s owners called police after they hadn’t seen her for a couple days.

Police say she was dead when they arrived and there was no sign of forced entry into her room. At this point they would not comment on whether they had any suspects.

They said they did not find a weapon and there was no sign of drug paraphernalia. They also said the hotel didn’t have any surveillance video.
