Dr. John Kapoor, a University at Buffalo alumnus whose name adorns the building housing the School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, is accused of leading a nationwide conspiracy to bribe doctors to prescribe a powerful opioid pain medication.

The U.S. Attorney's Office in Massachusetts stated Kapoor, along with former executives and managers of Insys Therapeutics Inc., are charged with racketeering and other crimes in a new indictment.

Kapoor and the other defendants are accused of offering kickbacks to doctors to write large numbers of prescriptions for a fentanyl-based pain medication that's meant for cancer patients.

A UB spokesperson stated that the university is aware of the arrest, but it's too early to comment.
