A fatal fire in Cortland County has inspired a new bill to expand New York's arson law. Brian Bermudez was making meth in his apartment in Homer back in September of 2016 when his lab exploded. The explosion caused a fire, and Bermudez's 81-year-old neighbor was killed. Bermudez eventually pleaded guilty to manslaughter and drug charges, but could not be charged with arson or with murder. Senator Jim Seward is sponsoring a bill to make what he calls drug-related arson a felony, with high penalties if the fire causes a death.
