ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. -- The Bills running game's been the strength to the offense, leading the NFL the past two seasons, but past success is now contributing to a unit that's struggling overall.

The Bills rank 17th in yards per game, but 29th in yards per carry. Running back LeSean McCoy is off to his slowest start since 2014, still looking to find the end zone for the first time.

"Something that’s been working for so long, I mean, stick with it," McCoy said. "Coaches know that, but also they have their own schemes that they want to do. Everybody puts a lot of time in it; a lot of research and study and preparation. You also want to do the things [that] we’ve been doing, just kind of do it better."

A factor has been the offensive line's struggle to adapt to a zone-blocking scheme. Coming out of the bye week, the Bills plan on shifting back more towards the power they've used in the past.

"It shows that they have a ton of experience and are adaptable and they can kind of go with the flow and change things mid-stream to suit us better," said Bills guard Richie Incognito.

The Bucs run defense ranks 12th in the league, allowing about 102 yards a game and Incognito says the line is not far from getting synced together. Making that process harder, though, is the constant change up front.

Cordy Glenn's been in and out with foot injuries, with rookie Dion Dawkins filling in at left tackle, while John Miller was benched before the bye week in favor of Vlad Ducasse at right guard.

"It can be tough, because you get so used to how a certain guy blocks compared to another guy," McCoy said. "Just like a runner, there’s different running styles, there’s different blockers. I mean, it could make a difference, but that’s an excuse. We’re all talking the same technique, we might do it differently, but it’s the same thing; you can’t let it be a distraction. Just got to man up, find a way.

Another perennial Pro Bowl back was in a similar spot from McCoy entering a match-up against the Bucs just last week and Adrian Peterson proceeded to win NFC Offensive Player of the Week honors with his best performance in two years.
