It's been a bumpy ride for the Greater Binghamton Airport in recent years.

United Airlines left in November 2016, with American Airlines right behind them in February 2017.

With holiday travel now upon us, some residents are frustrated there aren't more options.

"Somebody in Broome County should find out why we have no business here and do something about it. Taxpayers are not happy," said Cassandra Higgins, Chenango Bridge resident.

Broome County's struggles come as nearby airports are getting a big boost.

Elmira-Corning recently received more than $50 million in state funding for renovations.

Ithaca-Tompkins received more than $12 million and Syracuse Hancock International received $60 million.

Officials say that's actually good news for the area.

"I'm excited for our counterparts to get those grants. They've worked hard for them. We've got our applications in. We've sent our projects in. I just feel like every time another airport gets a grant, it just makes our odds a little bit higher," said Dave Hickling, Greater Binghamton Airport commissioner.

BGM offers just two Delta flights a day, but those flights are almost always full. Hickling says that community support will only help the airport grow.

"The more the airport's used, the better chance we have to both grow airport service and to get the support of the state for some projects here," said Hickling.

And Hickling says he's confident that support will come.

In the meantime, the airport is hoping to add more flights in the near future.

"We've always maintained communication with airlines, both existing and ones we're trying to get to come in, and those conversations have been pretty positive recently," said Hickling.

Hickling expects holiday travel to help those numbers in the coming months.

At one point, the Greater Binghamton Airport had flights to Atlanta, Washington, Philadelphia, Detroit and JFK.
