The new Elmira-Corning Regional Airport was unveiled Friday.

After almost two years of waiting the new airport has opened. Officials believe it will be a gateway to the region.

An official ribbon-cutting ceremony was held. The price tag for the construction came in at around $62 million. Construction on the new terminal took around 13 months to complete.

What can travelers look forward to?

300 additional parking spaces and 60 percent more floor space. There are also open courtyards. These are accessible through various lounge areas.

This project is part of a larger infrastructure plan. It includes making renovations and upgrading Ithaca Tompkins regional Airport and Hancock International Airport in Syracuse.

The county was awarded funding for the project back in 2016.

“We got the largest award in the state over any other airport with the $40 million plus the other $20 million that the federal government gave to us. So to have a world class, and that's how this is been described by the traveling public, by corning Inc., a world-class airport, that’s what the governor said we get to have it in our community I’m very proud” said Tom Santulli, Chemung County Executive.

The airport will eventually add an additional flight to the Washington-Dulles airport. That's expected for next year
