SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- The Republican candidate for governor says New York State can do better for veterans.

Marc Molinaro made a campaign stop outside of the Syracuse Veterans' Affairs Medical Center on Thursday.

Molinaro says if elected, he would ensure that the State Division of Veterans' Affairs has the ability to better coordinate the response for services across the state.

He says he would add new resources to help local divisions of the agency more effectively reach veterans.

Molinaro plans to expand behaviorial services, and make sure veterans in the criminal justice system have access to a different kind of process.

"We don't have the specialty treatment courts we once had. So there are people living, in particular, veterans with significant mental health issues that ought to be treated in a treatment court as opposed to simply languishing within the criminal justice system. That's where the state can do better," Molinaro said.

Molinaro is one of four challengers hoping to unseat Governor Andrew Cuomo.

The others are green candidate Howie Hawkins, Libertarian Larry Sharpe, and independent candidate Stephanie Miner.
