LAKEPORT, N.Y. — A father and son have been reunited after 67 years apart.

Gerald Pickert and his wife agreed to put their son Tom Vanhoespen up for adoption back in 1951.

Tom's daughter, Tammy Johnson, has been searching for years to find her biological grandfather.

Through Ancestry and Facebook, she got a few leads — less than 100 miles away in Lakeport.

She exchanged information and pictures with the man she would come to know as her uncle.

Now Tom and Gerald say they're looking forward to making up for lost time.

"It's great. It's, you know, something most people just don't experience,” said Vanhoespen.

"[I’m] mostly shocked. What's going on, I don't know, I couldn't tell you — I can tell you that I'm glad," Pickert said smiling.

The family has met three times in the last month.

They plan to celebrate Gerald's 86th birthday next month.
