BINGHAMTON, N.Y. -- A new coalition in Broome County is aiming to fight homelessness while ensuring more safe, affordable housing.

Thursday afternoon, the county executive announced the "Safe Housing Task Force."

The group will consist of the homeless coalition, the health department, and mayors from local municipalities.

This has left a major impact on the younger generation.

In the city of Binghamton, more than half of its student live in poverty.

"When the conditions are failing, when the conditions are poor, not only is that affecting their health, but, that affects whether they're able to maintain their consistent attendance at school,” said Rebecca Rathmell, Southern Tier Homeless Coalition Coordinator.

The coalition hopes to have new policies put in place in the next six months.

Their first meeting is in two weeks.
