BIG FLATS, N.Y. -- Following last month’s severe flooding, families in Big Flats were given more information about recovery efforts Thursday night, as many are still trying to clean up the mess weeks after the rain.

Tensions are high for many in Big Flats, and that emotion was on display at a meeting Thursday night. The focus: how to move forward after major flooding.

“Now, I got some great suggestions tonight and we need to follow up on them. We got some great information tonight, we need to proceed with that,” said Big Flats Town Supervisor Edward Fairbrother.

Residents heard their town sustained some $2 million in damage. Now the town supervisor is asking the board to help him get that money back into the community.

“We get that money in, we start putting it together, we’re going to start hiring contractors. We are going to start going after these projects. But I have to get everything together as one,” he said.

The funds will help fix streets people use every day, like Harris Hill Road.

Lawmakers broke down just how much damage they sustained.

“We spent about $700,000 to $800,000 a year in our system, so that’s almost three years of our highway program,” said Chemung County Public Works Commissioner Andrew Avery.

But neighbors say the cleanup effort isn't happening fast enough.

“We are getting a lot of water from above up on Harris Hill. Since they put new drainage up there it all comes down and pretty much hit our house, so we want that drainage cleaned out as soon as we can,” said Donna J. Dacey, a Big Flats resident.

And it’s not the first time DawnaJay Daisy and her husband have been hit. Leaving the session she says both her and the town just need help.

“This is pretty major and it was pretty scary and we got to hurricanes out there that are coming so I guess we are a little anxious about the fact that we are probably going to get water again,” Dacey said.

And with more rain coming, the town is asking residents to be patient.
