The Upstate Cancer Center has announced a new one-day treatment option for women with early stage breast cancer.

It's the first facility to offer the procedure in Central New York.

Instead of weeks of radiation, this new option allows breast cancer patients to have a one-time radiation treatment, while undergoing surgery.

The first patient to undergo the procedure says it's life-changing.

"I went at 7 in the morning and I was home by 3:30 in the afternoon. And Dr. Tai called about a week later and told me they got clean tissue and I was good to go. I was done. It was like, ‘Hallelujah!’ to have one treatment and be done. Because it does tire you out," said Cindy Steger.

The American Cancer Society says more than 250,000 new cases of breast cancer were diagnosed last year.

As with any medical treatment, you'll need to check with your physician to see if you're a candidate for this procedure.
