Binghamton, N.Y. --The unmanned aircraft are changing the world of radio controlled airplanes.

"You can go to K-mart pick up a drone and it doesn't really take any skill to build or fly and that causes a bit of problems for us, because people pick them up, they are simple to fly and they really don't understand the safety rules of flying in a national airspace," said Tony Jensen, President of the Binghaton Aeros Club.

When drones started gaining popularity, the Federal Aviation Administration was forced to make changes.

Safety is their biggest concern.

"It's critical because you really cause danger if you fly over people that are unprotected or on vehicles or try to fly over a stadium you're putting people's lives in danger you could actually hurt someone and not intending to. But because you don't know the rules and how to fly safely how high you can fly it can present a problem," said Jensen.

Although they can be dangerous, pilots say drones can serve an important purpose.

"They have some good use in the news industry covering things that you can get into like the forest fires and the flooding instance the drones can get in there and cover the flooding so they do have a practical commercial use," said Richard Andrese, an Aircraft Pilot.

And if used properly, can be fun.
