As construction season continues, the DOT is stressing work zone safety.

Workers urge drivers to slow down and pay attention in construction zones. The DOT says there have been 21 construction zone crashes this year.

Two workers involved in accidents told their stories. One, tore muscles in his neck. The other came within inches of losing his life after a metal beam dented his construction helmet.

“The point I'm trying to get across is that work zone safety is literally a matter of life and death. Historically 56 members of the DOT family have died on the job in work zones throughout New York State. Close calls happen all the time and almost all are preventable," said Paul Karas, NYDOT Acting Commissioner

Drivers are reminded that fines are doubled if you're caught speeding through work zones.
