BINGAHMTON, N.Y. -- The state's annual American Legion convention will head to Broome County in 2020.

The area won the bid after last hosting the event two years ago. 1,000 people are expected to attend the three-day convention.

Organizers say it will generate $875,000 in revenue. The event will feature a parade, panel discussions and information about veteran services.

It will be the 102nd annual state convention.

The convention comes at a time when posts are finding it hard to recruit new members, especially young vets.

Reasons include:

·         Not having time to participate

·         Taking time to adjust to daily life

·         Children, family duties

·         Searching for a home/place to live

But convention chairman Robert Gardner hopes this event will encourage more to join.

"This is where our programs come in. We usually try to get somebody who's a younger veteran to say, what can we do for you or what would you like us to do," said Robert Gardner, American Legion Convention Chairman.

The convention will be held July 16th-18th in 2020.
