BINGHAMTON, N.Y. -- Binghamton's Police Chief is calling the turnout for the department's recent open house, "disappointing."

The event was meant to give the community a chance to meet the officers, while getting potential recruits signed up for the upcoming police test.

Only 20 people attended.

It comes at a time when the department is already below staff due to injuries and officers on maternity leave.

Zikuski says it's been taxing on his crew, with some having to work special details. His goal is also to be able to hire more minority officers to diversify the force.

"We want to be a match to the community and the more diversity within the department, the better understanding people are going to have of us and we're going to have of them," said Joseph Zikuski, Binghamton Police Chief.

There are currently 140 budgeted positions within the Binghamton Police Department.
