BINGHAMTON, N.Y. -- A short-term respite house for those experiencing a mental health crisis opens its doors in Broome County.

"Our House," is a peer-run, home-like environment that offers a safe place for residents dealing with emotional distress.

Guests, 18 and older can self-refer themselves as an alternative to hospitalization.

Typical stays last between three and five days and offer wellness recovery plans and peer support, along with music and art opportunities.

So far, 40 people have utilized the services.

"A lot of people don’t want to have to take the time off of work, explain to their boss why they need to be off for a few days and a lot of it is just walking through those doors," said Emily Childress, Our House Director.

Anyone interested in a stay at Our House should call 607-771-8888 extension 350 to discuss arrangements.
