While the investigation continues into the shooting death of a New York State Trooper, those involved with the case are still coping with what happened.

Trooper Nicholas Clark was among the first to respond to a town of Erwin home Monday, where a man was reportedly suicidal.

Two sheriff’s deputies were called in to serve as back up. Negotiators tried to contact Steven Kiley. But State Police say shots rang out from within the home after several hours without communication.

Trooper Clark was hit and killed.

Investigators tell us he was in position next to the home's garage at the time. It is not clear if police returned fire.

Kiley was later found dead inside the home from an apparent gunshot wound.

Those who responded are still shaken up.

“The deputies that were involved are coping,” said Steuben County Sheriff Jim Allard. “As I said we’re making sure that they get the correct counseling, making sure that they get the necessary resources to engage with, to have continued recovery.“

Services for Trooper Clark have been set for this weekend. Calling hours are at Alfred University Saturday afternoon, with the funeral to follow at 11:00 Sunday morning.
