DRYDEN, N.Y. — School may be out, but come September, students in Dryden will be taking a more active role in their wellbeing.

It's all part of a new program called "Riding for Focus,” started by The Specialized Foundation.

Studies show that cycling for at least 20 minutes a day, three times a week, can improve students' learning, along with their physical and emotional behavior.

Dryden Middle School is one of 37 schools nationwide that will be given a fleet of bikes, helmets and curriculum to start the program.

The physical education teachers say their students will be able to experience something new while also having a safe place to ride.

And it sounds like the students are already eager to try it out.

"It's going to bring a lot of energy to the kids," said Nathan Solomon, a 10th grader. "Kids are going to want to come to school more. They're going to have more of a purpose to come to school and it's just going to be something that a lot of the kids will be able to utilize even if they don't have a bike at home to use."

Teachers hope to offer the program to high school students in the near future.
