Details surrounding the death of former Syracuse Football star Chris Gedney are being made public for the first time.

On the show "Real Sports" with Bryant Gumble, Gedney's suicide came up in a report profiling former NFL players with head trauma Tuesday night.

"A personal friend, Chris Gedney, two months ago he took his life,” said Gumble. “He played seven years in the NFL during a time when the NFL was not acknowledging that there was a connection between head trauma and playing in the NFL."

Gedney died in March at the age of 47.

After his playing days, he served as one of the voices of Orange football. He was known for being deeply loyal to SU and his community, but in last night's report, reporter Jon Frankel said people who knew Gedney best, knew that he was suffering.

"Chris recognized that there was something not right with his brain,” said Gumble. “He became depressed, there were other behavioral issues, and he takes his life."

The HBO report talked with numerous players who filed claims against the NFL, as they suffer the effects of concussions. While the majority has yet to receive any money from a $1 billion settlement, the report said that Gedney would not have qualified, if the only medical issue he was diagnosed with at the time of his death was depression.
