ELMIRA, N.Y. -- The debate continued as environmental activists again raise concerns about Elmira High School.

Toxics Targeting President Walter Hang said air making its way into the school contains toxins. He claims chemicals are coming up through cracks in the foundation. Hang said outside air is being used to try and keep fumes underground. He says the problem is that air is not clean either.

“The outdoor air is actually known to be polluted. The authorities are allowing polluted air to be pumped into the school building." Said Hang.

"We are conducting additional removal of contaminated soil from a portion of the site this summer. We continue to monitor air quality in the school," said Sean Mahar, the assistant commissioner for public affairs at NYDEC.

The DEC said crews will start doing the removal in June after school lets out for the summer.
