It's often the difference between putting food on the table and going hungry. But for so many in Broome County, keeping a good job doesn't come easy.

"When I lost my job, I was devastated, because I was working through a temporary agency and I worked for the company for like two months until that job was over, and I was let go," said Rodney Small.

But soon after, Small found some hope. Starting in April, the Broome-Tioga workforce started an "Opportunity Impact Warehouse Training Program." After graduating, you're guaranteed a full-time position with either Amrex Chemical, Maine's or Willow Run Foods.

"It feels wonderful to be able to accomplish something that I was able to accomplish," Small said, "because in the beginning of the program, I didn't know anything about forklift training or nothing. Never drove a vehicle in my life."

The three-week-long session provides participants with specific warehouse skills wanted by local employers...something long overdue in the county.

"There are thousands of jobs that are open in Broome County right now," said Broome-Tioga Workforce Executive Director Sarah Liu, "but we're finding that the employed folks in our community are lacking the skills that they need to be successful in those jobs."

The newly employed individuals can now use those skills to provide exactly what employers are looking for, and in the process, guiding Broome County families and businesses to new-found success.
